CITY OF THE FUTURE - BRITISH MAGAZINE PUTS CAMPBELL RIVER AMONT BEST OF SMALL CITIES (Grant WARKENTIN, THE Mirror)

Welcome to the world of tomorrow.

Campbell River might not have teleporters or a monorail or robots, but it has the second-best quality of life out of most small cities in North America according to UK-based Foreign Direct Investment magazine. It also ranked fifth in the "best development and investment promotion" category. The magazine's rankings qualify Campbell River as a "city of the future".

In a news release, Mayor Roger Mcdonell said Campbell River is evolving from a vacation destination into something bigger.

"For decades people have been coming to Campbell River form all around the world and finding a magnificent place to spend their vacation," he said. "More recently those same people are recognizing that they can move here, invest here and live in a thriving global city surrounding by nature."

For the past 5 years the magazine has published its ambitious rankings of cities, regions and countries.

This year it ranked North American cities according to how advanced and cutting-edge they are in comparison to each other.

Campbell River ranked second among micro-cities (cities under $100,000 population) in the quality of life category, second to Silverthorne, Colorado. They quality of life rankings were decided based on:
-Best housing areas.
-Average residential property purchase price.
-Average residential rental costs.
-Public and private healthcare facilities.
-Leading schools.
-Leading international schools.
-Cultural & environmental heritage.
-Incidents of crime per thousand people.

The cities were ranked by nine judges who reviewed nominations from 108 cities.

They ranked the nominations based on more than 60 criteria designed to assess a city's potential to attract business investment projects.

Campbell River was recognized for its attitude towards doing business.

Population/Demographics
A population of over 33,000 in the District of Campbell River and a market population of over 40,000, make Campbell River a major regional centre. It has a first class international reputation as the "Salmon Fishing Capital of the World", renowned for some of Canada's finest natural landscapes and hospitality.

A healthy population growth is vital to building a strong and diversified local economy. Campbell River's population projections are therefore most encouraging.

By provincial standards, Campbell River is a young community. In 1991, 72% of the population was under the age of 45, with 35% of the total population between 25 and 45 years of age.
